The Spanish shot-stopper has declared that intense competition for starting positions is driving Arsenal's impressive performance, with the keeper asserting that the team's roster under Mikel Arteta is so remarkable that they can compete for several trophies throughout the campaign.
Arsenal's latest 4-0 triumph over Atlético Madrid represented their sixth straight victory and tenth triumph in a dozen games. Having let in just three goals—a record low at this stage in the club's history—Arsenal have secured a narrow advantage at the top of the table and a perfect record in the Champions League after three matches.
Raya has featured in nearly every game, except for one Carabao Cup fixture, but Arteta has consistently rotated the lineup following heavy spending on recruits. When asked about chasing multiple trophies, Raya said, "Yes, I think so. The depth is amazing. We have numerous options who can perform in two, three, or four roles."
Like in the Atlético match, Mikel Merino came on as a striker and is capable of playing as a No 8 or attacking midfielder. That versatility is what the boss has, and he's using it to our advantage. It's looking very, very good, and that depth is crucial for us.
Raya added, "That gives you an extra level in practice and games because if you're not at it, your place is at risk instantly. That fosters intense rivalry in training and during matches, which is vitally significant, and everyone is on board."
Arsenal have conceded only one goal from open play so far, and Raya has had to deal with only one shot on target in their recent victories against Atlético, Fulham, and West Ham.
"Everyone contributes from the striker to the goalie," he said. "Each player is committed, no one wants to concede, and we aim to intercept passes prior to it crossing the halfway line. By winning it back, we can launch a quick counter. This is essential for the entire team to understand this mentality, and we're not allowing many chances, which is perfect."
