RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
