Democratic officials demonstrated anger after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in defense or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to defend and defend this national charter," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute commands that violate the law or our constitution."
The clip reportedly prompt a furious response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership issued a joint announcement censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a response.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who love this United States and took an pledge to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of government members."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also allegedly told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and determine all that."
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson said. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to organize a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the commander in chief's proper directives."
She added: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can result in disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
