The remains of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been located inside freezers in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were uncovered on Friday. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the flat, located in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in the month of June. The older man, a work associate of the Syrian woman, informed police last week that there had been an incident—but denied murder.

Speaking to journalists previously, a representative for the public prosecutor's office stated the brothers were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of homicide".

Personal details of those involved have been withheld by law enforcement, in following national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Police stated the 55-year-old suspect claimed at the time she had embarked on an long journey with her daughter to travel to her relatives in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then noted as being active overseas several times.

But when officers entered the woman's home, her mobile phone was located.

An individual also stated overhearing a commotion in the flat, and shouts of "mum" on the day the two were believed to have vanished.

A wider criminal probe was started, with authorities discovering various messages originating from the victim's mobile—including a job termination message to her company and communications to the 55-year-old suspect.

Officials stated a significant cash transfer was also moved to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office stated to reporters on recently that a storage unit had been leased before the vanishing and a cooling unit had been positioned inside.

The brothers removed the appliance from the storage space on the date the victims went missing, the official stated. And a shortly afterward, they purchased an additional appliance.

Authorities say they believe this suggests the fatalities were premeditated.

"How they died was not identifiable due to the state of decomposition of the remains," Tersch said.

The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—stated the exact sequence of events is yet to be determined, but the victims were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

Although the men were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the suspect acknowledged an incident and to storing the victims. He rejects any plan to cause death, investigators stated.

At the same time, his 53-year-old sibling confessed to a cover-up but denied knowledge of a murder.

The two suspects are at this time in custody awaiting trial in jails in Innsbruck and Salzburg, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative declared the "alleged double murder... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and exposes a cruel system".

"Female individuals are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are women and girls," they continued.

"Femicides are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must fight resolutely."
