Ex British Soldier Accused of Killing Kenya Female Shows Up in Courtroom

A suspect has been presented in court as extradition hearings commenced in the legal matter of the victim Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was killed near a British forces camp in 2012.

The accused Robert Purkiss, 38 years old, who is originally from the Manchester area, was presented at the Westminster court on Friday, and informed the court he intended to contest the deportation. Reports indicate that he was detained on Thursday night.

A warrant for arrest for the suspect was issued by a court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors stated before the Kenyan court that Purkiss had been charged with a one count, of murder, and that the government of Kenya would seek his extradition to answer to accusations.

The defendant was once employed as a medical attendant with the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, the army unit for the north-west of England, including on deployments in Afghanistan.

Agnes Wanjiru, 21 years old, a beautician who had a baby daughter, disappeared after a evening out, and her body was located 60 days later in the grounds of the accommodation where she had previously spotted.

No one had previously been detained or indicted in connection to her demise. The arrest of Purkiss was the result of a new police inquiry, which was initiated after a report in the year 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the newspaper contacted several active and retired troops in the unit.

This inquiry has been headed by detectives in Kenya, which, under a mutual defense pact, maintains prosecutorial power in the matter.
