Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.

A Resounding Triumph

With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Campaign Focused On Security and Immigration

Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to combat rising insecurity and significantly reduce migration.

He frequently cited migrants, notably the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he gave an stern warning for them to depart before the inauguration or face removal.

His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as erecting camps, high walls, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern border.

Within a Regional Shift

Several observers see Kast's win as part of a larger conservative wave in the region, following recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other experts further frame it as a extension of the established swing of power between left and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Strong Majority

In spite of his clear electoral triumph, Kast will not hold an overall majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are counted together.

This legislative situation could challenge his agenda, such as a promise to reduce public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.

"There are numerous things about what a Kast presidency will operate that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will achieve them," noted a political science analyst.

The expert continued, "On economic policy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right. But the area with much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
