Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
