The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
