Shock as Popular South African DJ Killed in Johannesburg.

A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old presenter was approached by three suspects, with one opened fire on him before running away.

The motive of the incident has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, according to authorities.

The Fatal Incident

Police said that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a premises close to the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the site managing the installation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a security uniform opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Important clues, like spent shells, were discovered at the crime scene.

Investigation Ongoing

Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to assist with the investigation.

"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and police have been tracking them to establish their whereabouts," added an official.

A Nation in Mourning

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to process his death.

"Words fail me. I don't have words," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the community to refrain from sharing graphic images from the incident, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's young family.

A Multifaceted Career

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that aired on a popular local broadcasting platform.

In addition to his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, supplying high-level security services and managing safety for high-profile events across South Africa.

He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and was involved in tenant removals.

Official and Public Tributes

His murder has caused national trauma and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the authorities and political parties.

A government minister said he was angry and saddened by Stock's killing.

"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even spoke up against me and my decisions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," he stated.

A political leader stated the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".

A media executive noted that "Stock was more than just a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every moment on screen. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."

In a statement, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his presence, warmth and quick humor, adding that his influence "will be remembered".

South Africa, the African economic powerhouse, has one of the planet's most severe homicide statistics, exacerbated by robberies and organized criminal activity, with some 63 people losing their lives per day between April and September, as per police data.
