The athlete entered the previous US Open as the 26th seed.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed he thought about quitting the sport due to severe spinal pain during the 2025 tennis year.

At 27 years old, the player once ranked as high as third globally, finished as runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 French Open alongside the 2023 Australian Open.

Currently placed as the world's 36th best player following minimal competition since his second-round departure at the US Open this past summer, Tsitsipas indicated that ongoing treatment is finally showing positive results.

"I'm most excited lies in seeing how my body holds up under actual training with regard to my back," said Tsitsipas.

"The biggest fear centered on if I was able to finish an encounter," the athlete continued, noting the injury had troubled him "for the past six to eight months."

"I would wonder, 'Can I compete another contest without discomfort?'"

"It was genuinely scary after the defeat at the US Open [to Germany's Daniel Altmaier]. I was unable to move for two days. That's when you begin to question the path ahead."

Tsitsipas further mentioned satisfaction regarding the present treatment regimen following the completion of an extended period of pre-season training completely pain-free.

He is scheduled to compete with the Greek team in the United Cup, drawn against Team Japan led by Osaka and the Great Britain squad led by Emma Raducanu. The competition takes place across Australian cities from 2 to 11 January, just before the Australian Open.

"The greatest victory next season is to stop worrying over completing bouts," he stated.

"It provides fantastic feedback realizing you had an off-season without pain – I hope it continues. I aim to perform in 2026 and at the team championship.

"The effort is invested. The crucial element is complete faith in my ability to get back to where I was. I will attempt everything to make it happen."
