This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
