The Reasons the Duke of York is Giving Up His Official Titles – and the Implications for the Monarchy

In a statement released via the royal household, Prince Andrew has declared that he will be giving up his official honors, including his dukedom. Here is an overview of what has been revealed – and what wasn't.

What Did Andrew Said?

After previously stepped down as a working royal in 2019, the prince has currently decided to “take additional measures” and consent not to use the “honor or the honours which have been granted to” him.

But he also used the statement to emphatically denying – consistent with his past statements – the accusations of sexual impropriety made against him; albeit having paid out a substantial sum to settle the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – a settlement in which he accepted no fault and firmly denied any claims of improper conduct.

There has existed persistent pressure toward the royal institution regarding the allegations involving the prince – particularly after his disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims that his actions are to safeguard his relatives from further damage resulting from public speculation.

Has the King Removed Him of His Honors?

No. And, while this could be dismissed as a mere formality, it holds importance in multiple ways: initially, it allows Andrew to openly state to have behaved with integrity in support of the crown. As stated in his statement: “I have chosen, consistent with my past, to prioritize my obligations to my family and the nation first.”

Additionally, although he consented to abstain from using it, the prince keeps his ducal title, as well as the titles the Earl of Inverness and his barony and the prestigious Garter role as Royal Knight Companion of the prestigious order. To forcibly remove a ducal title would take an act of parliament, and would constitute such a historic move publicly before the public – it has not happened to a senior royal in over a century – that it could result in further harm to the image for the royals.

Andrew is also still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he became as the child of the sovereign. This would only be altered if a royal decree was enacted by the reigning monarch.

There have also been stories about his association with an alleged intelligence operative and, recently, extracts were published from the book released after death of Giuffre, who died by suicide in April. She claimed the prince “believed that having sex with me was his entitlement”.

Moreover, the sovereign is scheduled to undertake a significant trip to meet Pope Leo soon, during which he will be the initial British king since Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church in 1534 to pray publicly with the pope and head of the Catholic church. He would not desire that trip to be marred by more negative headlines about Andrew.

What Has Been the Response?

Although he stated Giuffre had been “vindicated” by the decision, Giuffre’s brother Sky Roberts has told the Times that Andrew’s honorary prince title should be revoked for “genuine accountability” to be achieved.

The anti-monarchist advocacy organization Republic has additionally stated the move is “too little, too late”, noting: “The prince continues to be facing allegations of sexual offences and misuse of position. He should be divested of all titles and his navy rank and should face a legal probe. Not using archaic honors is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
