What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as ā€œlively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help peopleā€.

ā€œHow is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?ā€ a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. ā€œHe moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,ā€ she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

ā€œThis low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,ā€ the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an ā€œabsolute bloodbath,ā€ but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a ā€œstroke of luckā€ he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard ā€œdozens and dozensā€ of gunshots.

ā€œI thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,ā€ he explained. ā€œI’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.ā€
